Ever jumped on to a teleclass and heard the flat introduction that makes you immediately want hang up?
Or sat in the audience of a meeting, presentation, or speech that starts slow and dry, and just as its beginning you’re already wishing it would end?
Remember that its hard to go from being “in your head” to suddenly rocking your talk. Video, Audio, Live in person… its all the same.
You wouldn’t go from sitting on the couch all day to running a marathon without warming and stretching, and this isn’t any different. So we’re going to warm up your engines first and find out what happens.
Even if you think this sounds nuts, over the top, and not for you because “you’re not a professional speaker” “you just lead meetings at work” “you just lead little local workshops”…
TRUST ME AND TRY IT! Before your rock your talk…
1. Warm up your VOICE so that you have vocal variety: Chat with a friend using lots of inflection, do scales (think music class), or sing along with your favorite song. This will give your voice a little more range, more highs and lows, which keeps people’s attention.
2. Warm up your BODY so that you’re connected and grounded: stretch, lift a few weights, do a few push ups. Get grounded in your body and connected. You’ll stand taller and you’ll speak with more confidence.
3. Get your BLOOD PUMPING and YOUR ENERGY BUMPING: clap your hands, jump up and down, have a dance party, shout out a loud “WOOOO HOOOO!!!”Do whatever it takes to get the blood pulsing through your veins, and the energy and enthusiasm you need to lead!
Then and only then should you step on stage, start your teleclass, or lead your webinar. What happens after steps 1,2 and 3 is that now you’re engaged, energized, and ready to dive in. You’ll start your talk with the energy you’d normally take 5 or 10 minutes to work up to, and it will pay off big time.
People will be leaning in and paying attention from the get-go, and you won’t have to try to win them over later, because you’ll already have them leaning in and wanting more!
Willing to give it a try? Let me know how it works!
